DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY GALLERY

 

Design Technology at Parkhill Infant’s School aims to provide children with an awareness of the world around them and how the products they use/ eat on a daily basis are made. 

We aim to provide children with a DT education that is relevant in our rapidly changing world.  We want to encourage our children to become problem solvers, who can work creatively individually and on shared projects.

Design Technology is a crucial part of school life and integral to learning. Children are supported to develop skills alongside the design process related to food technology, sewing, moving mechanisms and more.

Our DT curriculum is enriched and tailored to meet the needs of each year group with schemes of work taken from both PlanBee and projects on a page (DATA).

 

 

 

In EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, the essential building blocks of children’s design and technology skills are established. There are many opportunities for carrying out DT related activities in all areas of learning in the EYFS.

Children are given the chance to work with and explore a range of different materials. They are also encouraged to think critically about what they have created.

In Year 1 & Year 2

Each year group takes part in one Design and Technology topic per term and one of these topics is food related. Food technology and cooking skills are also taught several times throughout the year. This may be linked with other subjects or also have a Design focus. Cooking is enhanced further through other special events like Cultural Day or Healthy Eating Week.

Design and Technology is embedded into our curriculum and visiting workshops link into projects the children undertake - for example, we had a visit from a firefighter and following her talk, Year 2 constructed their own fire engines.  This was also tied into History, talking about the difference that fire engines would have made if they had existed at the time of the Great Fire of London.
